How We Review Products

Our goal is to help people with joint pain, stiffness, and reduced grip strength find adaptive tools that genuinely restore daily independence. We don’t publish casual opinions or rewrite manufacturer descriptions β€” every product goes through the same structured evaluation, led by founder John Allan, who brings 30+ years of quality assurance and procurement experience β€” and his own daily experience with arthritis β€” to every review. Read more about John’s story on our About page.

What We Evaluate
Every product is assessed against the same four criteria, whether John has it in hand or is evaluating it from specs, manuals, and verified user feedback:

1. Build Quality & Durability
We look at whether a tool will hold up to daily use β€” seam strength on compression garments, hinge wear on reaching aids, how plastic components perform over time β€” drawing on manufacturer materials data, warranty terms, and patterns across long-term user reviews. If it’s likely to warp, snap, or fray within weeks, it doesn’t make the list.

2. Joint-Stress Reduction
The point of an arthritis aid is to take strain off vulnerable joints. We assess whether a product’s design actually shifts force away from small finger and hand joints and onto larger muscle groups, like the forearm or shoulder β€” not just whether it claims to β€” based on its mechanics, grip design, and what verified users report.

3. Usability With Limited Dexterity
We evaluate how a product is likely to perform during a flare, with reduced grip strength:

  • Whether grip textures are genuinely non-slip, or need extra squeezing force
  • Whether closures, buttons, and zippers can be managed with minimal fine-motor coordination
  • Whether the tool is balanced well enough not to fatigue the hand during extended use

4. Value for the Cost
We weigh a product’s build and performance against its price. If a cheaper, well-engineered alternative outperforms a premium option, we’ll say so.

How We Gather Our Data

  • Hands-on testing: Select core products are purchased out-of-pocket and tested directly by John β€” reviews that involve hands-on testing note it explicitly.
  • Technical spec review: For every product, we check manufacturer data sheets, materials, and manuals against real-world performance claims.
  • User feedback tracking: We track long-term feedback across verified third-party sources to catch sizing issues, durability problems, or defects that only surface after months of use.

Editorial Integrity
Arthritis Wares is reader-supported β€” we may earn a small commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. That doesn’t change what we recommend or how we review it. Reviews are never sponsored, and we include drawbacks whenever they’re relevant, even for products we otherwise like.
